I have always seen or heard of surgeries when the go to “prep” the area to be examined or cut open, they take an iodine swab and bathe the area all around it. I really never understood what this was for until I did some research, and then it began to make sense. It is used as an antiseptic to prepare the skin for surgery. Plus, they also use it as a skin cleanser, and also as an antiseptic.
I haven’t really seen it sold in stores, and technically haven’t seen it outside the medical field. However, I remember my great-grandma have a jar of it sitting on one of her bathroom shelves years ago when I was a little girl. After researching, now I finally knew why she had it. It is a great disinfectant, and kills the germs that are there when you get a scratch or bet bit by the family pet. I had to use it just the other day on a cut from shaving – it stung, but at least I knew it was working!
We plan on going camping soon, and I plan on putting this inside our First-Aid kit. My family isn’t the most graceful when it comes to the outdoors, which means there will be some injuries to tend to. I also recently found out that adding a couple of drops can make water drinkable as well. I do like that it is in a small, glass bottle, complete with eye dropper, because with iodine, you don’t want to overdo it!
